Show and Sale Report

A good turnout of buyers ensured an 83% clearance at this week’s sale, held by McCartney’s auctioneers at their Worcester Market. A packed sale ring ensured there was a strong trade for the quality sheep forward and females in particular were in big demand.

The Supreme Champion at the pre-sale show, judged by Nina Smith of Blue tone Flock, was the homebred Whatmore Wildfire from Mrs Sara Gibbons, Dan-Y-Mynydd, Tregoyd, Brecon. A triplet shearling ewe by Whatmore Siren, she had previously won first and Reserve Female Champion at this year’s Royal Welsh Show and the buyers supported the judge’s decision by seeing her make the top female price of the day at 1500gns, when she sold to Mr Heath, Brook House, Naggington Ashbourne. Mr Heath also followed the judge’s opinion by purchasing the 1st prize ewe lamb, Glan-Y-Mor Xena from Mathew Jones, Glan-Y-Mor, Yny, Talsarau, Gwynedd, joined the Champion at Brook House with Mr Heath for 1100gns. Mr Heath also later added Beaconsview Xtra, a ram lamb from Chris Davies, Breconsview Flock, Caebetranm Felinfach Brecon, for 1700gns.

Top price of the day however went to a ram lamb from Paul Tippetts and Christine Williams’, Hackney flock based at Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane Shifnal, Shropshire, when Hackney Xtrovert, a Whatmore Siren son, sold to Mr G Hardman, Farm Mill, Mill Lane, Lowbands, Gloucestershire for 2200gns. He was closely followed by the Reserve Male Champion, Jonsland Xcess, from Dan & Janine Jones’s flock, based at Tynybryn Farms, Tregynon, Newton, Powys when this Jonsland Will I Am sired ram lamb sold to Mrs H Clarke, Model Farm, Brick Kiln Rd, Hevingham, Norwich, for 2100gns to join her Williams Flock.

The Millside Flock of David and Jennifer Alexander, Galston, Ayrshire had a good trade with their pen of shearling ewes, including the second top female price of the day when an ET daughter of Craigalbert sold to Mr T.G.O. Douglas & Co, Upper Ash trees, Camptown Jedburgh to join his Jethart Flock for 1450gns. She was quickly followed by the next lot in the ring selling to the Beetly Flock of W.J. & M. O. Abram, High House, Beetly, Dereham for 1050gns and then her ET full sister sold to Mr Fletcher from Kent for 1250gns. Millside trade gave the Alexander’s a top average of 954gns for the nine shearling ewes sold.

An 1100gns bid secured Natyderri Nan for Adrian & Clive Richardson’s, Cleenagh Flock from Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. She is a Whatmore Walnut daughter out of a Millside ewe.

Second top price of the day in the male section once again followed the judge’s recommendation when Andrew Froggetts, 1st prize aged Millside Ram, who bred the Champion and top priced female at the 2013 sale sold for 1800gns to Messrs Jenkins & Sons, Torycoed Farm, Rhiwsaeson, Llantrsant, Mid Glamorgan.

Joshua Isabel & Richard Kimber’s Beanhill Wonderful Teddy, who has been successfully shown by nine year old Isabel all season made 1150gns selling to Messrs Mann, Waterend Farm, Coaley, Dursley, Gloucestershire.
